An eclipse has been associated with a lot of different things. In some cultures, an eclipse is taken as an omen, a warning that something bad will happen.
The eclipse has also influenced TV shows and movies. Everyone is pretty familiar that in Heroes, the main cast got their abilities during a total solar eclipse (I wonder if some people got their abilities today).
In addition, it has also been used as the title of the third book on the Twilight Saga, signaling a dark moment on Edward and Bella's story.
Even though people have contrasting views about what the eclipse would really mean for us, it is still quite a sight to behold. The 2009 eclipse is very special in its own right because it is considered to be the longest total solar eclipse within the century.
For those who missed the Great Eclipse of 2009 (which will happen again in 2132), here's a little treat for you:

wisdom lies in their simplification.”
